One of the huge advantages of choosing to train through The Coventry SCITT is that the training has been written and will be delivered by outstanding practitioners.
Although School Direct is a very hands on approach to training to teach, we are keen to ensure that high quality training sessions complement the practical learning of delivering lessons. The following training will be compulsory during your training year:

  • MA taught sessions. These are delivered by Birmingham City University and are taught at level 7. They are geared toward successful completion of all level 7 assignments in order to obtain the PGCE. These sessions will be delivered at one of The Coventry SCITT partner schools.

  • Current education issues. These are key to understanding the context of education and will help you to understand the profession more fully. Much of this training is based on national priorities such as child protection & safeguarding and behaviour management.

  • Teaching & learning. These sessions are to ensure that you become a good/outstanding classroom practitioner by the end of your training year. These sessions will be written and delivered by current outstanding practitioners such as SLEs (Specialist Leaders in Education). They will be based around the most current educational research and will be primary specific for primary trainees and secondary specific for secondary ones.
  • Research-based lesson study. At several points throughout the year you will embark upon lesson study with your subject mentor. This involves choosing an educational issue pertinent to you and developing it further by conducting some research in the classroom. This will help to form a part of your PGCE credits.

  • WOW weeks. WOW stands for Watch Others Work and this event will happen three times over the course of the year. A day will be dedicated to you choosing other practitioners to watch, be it other trainees or colleagues who have been teaching for 20 years. You spend the day watching them teach and pick up valuable tips and advice to transfer to your own practice in your own classroom.

All training sessions are checked by the SCITT Director, Training Manager and your subject mentor to ensure that all training is of the same high calibre.
